What is a VPS? When should I choose a VPS?
VPS (virtual personal server) is a dedicated server running in a virtual environment. VPS has most of the advantages of a physical dedicated server. It is limited only by the selected virtualization technology and can be expanded by connecting additional parameters. The most important difference between VPS and virtual hosting is that the user is granted root rights (full rights to the server) on the VPS. With these rights, the administrator can install additional software, as well as create/delete users and flexibly manage the server the way you want. To do this, you need to have Linux administration skills. We use VPS servers: based on KVM virtualization, description at the bottom of the article. When choosing a VPS, it is important to understand that server resources are spent not only on the operation of your sites, but also on the operation of all services, including web server services, mail server, database server, etc. Thus, if we compare the power of VPS and virtual hosting, only from VPS-3 and above you can get about the same power as on virtual hosting. Do not be afraid, because everything depends on the tasks of the project, and you can always flexibly configure your server for the necessary needs, regardless of the chosen VPS tariff.
VPS should be selected in the following cases
- if your project has outgrown virtual hosting. In this case, it is worth considering only powerful (highly loaded) VPS tariffs;
- for the site to work, it is necessary to install a separate software (corresponding to the specifics of the project);
- there is a need for large amounts of disk space;
- for high-load projects, in this case, only powerful (high-load) VPS tariffs should be considered. In other cases, it is worth considering cheaper VPSservers.;
- a server is required for mailing lists. In this case, it is necessary to comply with all the requirements of mailing lists, read the article;
Virtual hosting is preferable
- If you don't have a good reason to switch to a VPS, we recommend that you stay on a virtual hosting, as it is the most convenient to use. At the same time, if your projects no longer fit into the framework of conventional web hosting, the following solutions will help you:
- separation of sites by several virtual hosting services (different rates for different sites). Thus, the load will be distributed across several services and your projects will be able to continue to exist on a regular hosting without consuming each other's resources.
- you do not have a server administrator, and for some reason you do not need one.
